Spelt Bread~ Easy & No Kneading

We've had 500 grams of spelt flour sat in the cupboard for over a year now. Each time I'd look inside the cupboard, there it was, looking at me with an accusatory-floury glare.

So we bit thew bullet and made some spelt bread from it. And boy, am I ever glad that we did? Whilst it contains gluten, it does have a lot more health benefits than regular flour. It is a little pricier (of course) but it really turned out very nicely. It has a nutty, flavourful taste too. Everything we used was from our cupboard and is part of our current using everything up week.

So, how did we make it? It was very easy.

Spelt Bread

500g of spelt flour
Tbs of baking soda
Tbs of sugar
Pinch of salt
2 Tbs of olive oil
Tbs of lemon juice
550 ml of water
Optional are the seeds

*Throw the whole lot in a bowl together and mix until well combined.
*When combined spatulate (my word I know) the whole lot into a buttered/well-oiled loaf tin.
* Cook on 160 degrees Celsius for one hour or until the skewer you might own comes out cleanly.
*Demolish. I enjoyed peanut butter and honey as my topping! Marvellous.

  1. Nice one! When I am back on bread, I'll try that one. I must look up whether baking soda is bicarb on soda or baking powder in the UK!
Using up what you already have is a very important aspect of frugality, I think.

  2. You have inspired me. I also have a bag of spelt flour which has been on the shelf for far too long. We are out of bread, so I'll try this one today. Thank you.

  3. Don't you dislike it when things glare at you from the cupboard? They do that here too. LOL

It looks great and sounds easy to make. Thanks. :)

  4. I have never tried spelt bread but keep meaning to see what it's like. I made soda bread the other day - first time ever and it was nice, but my favourite is an oat loaf with seeds and rosemary. The texture is quite solid but it's lovely with soup.
